Description
Electricity at Work Training for Duty Holders
This practical, in-person course is designed for people who have responsibility for electrical safety within a workplace but are not necessarily electricians.
It explains what the Electricity at Work Regulations require, who may hold responsibility within an organisation, and how electrical equipment and installations should be managed safely.
The course combines taught sections with practical business scenarios, group discussion and workbook activities.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is suitable for:
- Facilities and premises managers
- Health and safety managers
- Business owners and directors
- Building managers and caretakers
- Compliance and operations managers
- People responsible for appointing electrical contractors
- Anyone given responsibility for workplace electrical safety
No previous electrical qualification is required.
What Will the Course Cover?
The course will help delegates understand:
- What the Electricity at Work Regulations are
- Who the Regulations apply to
- Who may be considered a duty holder
- The responsibilities of employers, employees and self-employed people
- The difference between portable equipment, fixed equipment and the fixed electrical installation
- How electrical risks should be identified and managed
- The role of inspection, testing and maintenance
- How maintenance frequencies should be based on risk
- How supporting guidance can be used to inform decisions
- How to appoint competent electrical contractors
- What records and evidence an organisation may need
- When specialist electrical advice is required
The course does not train delegates to carry out electrical inspection or testing themselves.
Practical Scenario-Based Learning
The course is built around realistic workplace scenarios.
Each taught section is followed by a group activity where delegates apply what they have learned to a fictional business.
The scenarios may include issues involving:
- Portable electrical equipment
- Fixed electrical equipment
- Distribution boards and fixed wiring
- Staff-owned equipment
- Contractors
- Purchasing decisions
- Outdoor electrical use
- Homeworking
- Public access
- Damaged equipment
- Inspection and maintenance records
This approach helps delegates relate the Regulations to decisions they may need to make in their own workplace.
Workbook Assessment
There is no formal examination.
Delegates complete a course workbook containing practical activities and scenario-based coursework throughout the day.
The completed workbook forms the course assessment and provides evidence that the delegate has understood and applied the main course content.
Delegates must participate in the activities and complete the required workbook sections to receive their certificate.
