Crews attended a fire last night at the Grade II listed building Salt Mills in Saltaire believed to have started due to an electrical fault. The fire, which broke out in the living room an apartment, was noticed by the person in the flat and fire crews arrived at 01:38.

The blaze early this morning, 26th January 2018, in the apartment at Riverside Court, Victoria Road, in the section of the complex that has been converted into flats, with the rest of the iconic former textile mill now housing a shopping centre, restaurants and art galleries.

Richard Driver, watch commander at Shipley Fire Station, who attended along with Fire & Rescue personell from Bingley, said: “There was just one person living in the flat, and they woke up and noticed the fire in the living room.

“They attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful, so set the main fire alarm off to alert the other residents and also the fire service.

“We used two breathing apparatus, one large jet and positive pressure ventilation fans to extinguish the fire and clear away the smoke.

“There were no injuries in the fire. Fire investigation officers are looking into the cause, which we believe was an electrical fault.”

Electrical testing, such as PAT testing and EICR‘s can help reduce the risk of fire in buildings, along with fire, heat and smoke detection systems mandatory in new build domestic properties and correct construction methods to stop the fire spreading between properties.
